Continuing the historical theme, Burwell Museum is just 10 minutes away (www.burwellmuseum.co.uk) offering a view of village life on the edge of The Fens.

Just 5 minutes further on is Devil's Dyke, which is one of the best examples of Anglo-Saxon earthwork in Britain. You can walk along it to the medieval village of Reach.

Also in Suffolk, about 40 minutes away, is the wonderfully-preserved medieval town of Lavenham.

Wicken Fen Nature Reserve is 15 minutes away (www.wicken.org.uk). It was the very first Nature Reserve to be owned by The National Trust and has been in its care since 1899. It remains one of the most important wetlands in Europe.
